UA to Hold 2019 Fall Commencement Exercises Dec. 14

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama will hold its fall commencement exercises Saturday, Dec. 14, at Coleman Coliseum on the UA campus.

UA has more than 2,300 degree candidates.

Graduates will participate in two ceremonies that day, beginning at 9 a.m. with the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Communication and Information Sciences, College of Engineering and School of Social Work. Students in the Capstone College of Nursing, College of Education, College of Human Environmental Sciences and Culverhouse College of Business will participate at 1:30 p.m.

UA’s commencement marshals will be Dr. Joseph E. Phelps, professor in advertising and public relations, and Dr. Theodore Louis Trost, professor in religious studies and New College.

Phelps joined the department of advertising and public relations in 1990 and served as chair from 2009-2019. He has an international reputation as an advertising scholar. Phelps earned the highest distinction in his field when he was named a fellow of the American Academy of Advertising, an honor which recognizes outstanding lifetime contributions to advertising research.

Trost served as chair of the department of religious studies from 2009-2013. He later was a visiting research fellow at Leeds University, England, while on sabbatical from UA. Currently, he teaches courses in religion and popular culture, the Bible, songwriting, and the resort to religion rhetoric in politics, literature and film. Trost is the author or editor of several books, including the upcoming “Love Across the Atlantic: US-UK Romance in Popular Culture.”
