UA Crossroads Center Invites Campus to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Crossroads Community Center invites the community to participate in a variety of events offered on campus for national Hispanic Heritage Month.

Activities and events and will range from health forums and guest speakers to films and women’s soccer. The events are part of UA Is Culture, a yearlong program that salutes a different culture each month.

The cultural celebration will begin with a Study Abroad Fair on Sept. 18, saluting the many opportunities for international study at UA. In the last year, UA students have studied in several Spanish-speaking countries, and a member of the graduating class of 2012 received a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to Spain.

The Crossroads Community Center is an initiative of the UA Division of Community Affairs, under the direction of Dr. Samory Pruitt, UA vice president for community affairs.

Throughout the month – Women’s Resource Center hosts the “Hispanic-Latina Women Who Dared” poster campaign across campus. Complete biographies at http://wrc.ua.edu.

September 17, 20, 26 and 28 – Sigma Lambda Gamma National Multicultural Sorority sponsors voter registration in honor of their Latina founding sisters, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. each day, second floor Ferguson Center.

Tuesday, Sept. 18 – Capstone International Programs hosts a Study Abroad Fair featuring study abroad providers from around the world, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., second floor Ferguson Center.

Tuesday, Sept. 18 – Crossroads Community Center and Capstone International Programs host “Capstone Conversations: Travel and Study in the Latino World,” 4:30 – 5:30 p.m., Ferguson Center TV lounge. Juan Pablo Black Romero will lead students who have returned from studying abroad in the Spanish-speaking world in a discussion about their experiences.

Wednesday, Sept.19 – Women’s Resource Center hosts “The Effects of HB 56 on Women and Families: One Year Later” with Zayne Smith, Alabama Appleseed, 3:30 – 5 p.m., 205 Gorgas Library.

Friday, Sept. 21 – Crossroads Community Center and Capstone International Services host the  International Coffee Hour, 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., 121 B.B. Comer Hall.

Monday, Sept. 24 – Spectrum, the LGBTQ+ student organization, hosts “Intersections of Queer and Hispanic Identities,” 7 – 8 p.m., 205 Gorgas Library.

Tuesday, Sept. 25 – Women’s Resource Center, the College of Education and the department of American studies host a film screening and panel discussion of Precious Knowledge, 6 – 7:30 p.m., 205 Gorgas Library.

Thursday, Sept. 27 – Women’s Resource Center hosts an Everywoman Book Club lunch and conversation with Lila Quintero Weaver, author of Darkroom: A Memoir in Black and White, noon, the University Club. Wednesday, Oct. 10 – The faculty in residence program of the Honors College, the department of modern languages and classics, the Spanish House and Spanish Club host the documentary viewing and discussion of Romántico (Mark Becker, 2005, Spanish with English subtitles) 6:30 p.m., 337 Lloyd Hall.

Thursday, Oct. 11 – Capstone College of Nursing hosts “Reflections on Culture, Healthcare and Spirituality in Iquitos, Peru,” 4:30 – 5:30 p.m., 300 Ferguson Center. Students reflect on their research and cultural experience in Peru in a presentation led by Dr. Marilyn Handley, CCN associate professor.

Friday, Oct. 12 – Women’s Resource Center, Alabama Soccer, Graduate Parent Support Program, Work Life Balance, Kreative Kidz, and the Graduate Ambassadors host the UA Women’s Soccer Family Fun Day, children’s games at 6 p.m., soccer at 7 p.m., UA Soccer Field.  Free admission and free parking in the large Recreation Center lot.
