UA Community Service Center to Hold First Beat Auburn Beat Hunger 5K Race

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Community Service Center is hosting a 5K race Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. as a fundraiser for this year’s Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive.

The race will begin at the University Recreation Center Outdoor Pool parking lot. Participants will have the opportunity to run or walk the 3.1 mile course, which will loop through the University and finish back at the pool.

“We’re anticipating a huge turnout for this first ever Beat Auburn Beat Hunger 5K. It will definitely bring community members together for a fun event to generate more awareness and support for such a great cause,” said Charlotte Brown, director of this year’s Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive.

Beat Auburn Beat Hunger is an annual food drive that began in 1994 and has since helped collect almost 3 million pounds of food. From Oct.10-Nov.18, students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members “fight” hunger and poverty in West Alabama by challenging Auburn University and the Food Bank of East Alabama to see who can collect more nonperishable food to help needy Alabama families have a happier and healthier holiday season.

Participants can register for the race prior to Nov. 6 by filling out the registration form, found in the Community Service Center office, 346 Ferguson Center, or by going to http://beatauburnbeathunger.ua.edu and clicking ‘5K’ under the Events tab.

A registration fee of $15 will be applied to those who register before Nov. 6 and $20 the day of the race. Registration will be open on Nov. 6 from 1 – 1:45 p.m. at the Outdoor Pool. All registered participants will receive an event T-shirt. The top three male and female runners will be honored at an awards ceremony starting at 4 p.m. Door prizes will also be given following the race, and all guests are encouraged to bring nonperishable food donations.

The food bank is accepting all nonperishable food items, and collection barrels are placed at locations on campus and around Tuscaloosa. Monetary donations will be accepted at various Bama Dining locations, by texting BAMA to 27722, and online at http://beatauburnbeathunger.ua.edu.
