UA Classics Program to Hold Latin Day March 4

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Classics Program will host the third annual Latin Day for Alabama high school students on Friday, March 4, in the Ferguson Center from 9:10 a.m.-2:15 p.m.

Some 500 students from around the state are expected to attend this year’s event.

Latin Day, organized by UA professors and students, is open to all high school students who are currently taking Latin. Activities include a mythology face-off competition, a Roman history scholars bowl, singing pop songs in Latin, reciting Latin poetry, acting in skits, exhibiting promotional posters, drawings, cartoons and crafts, as well as a Roman fashion show.

Favorite events include Roman Cuisine, where students can cook dishes from an ancient cookbook written by the chef Apicius, and the Roman Fashion Show, where students make authentic costumes inspired by ancient works of art.

There are 21 different competition categories at Latin Day. The top winners in each category are given a trophy, while second- and third-place finishers receive certificates. Movies, T-shirts and a $500 scholarship for the UA in Greece program will also be raffled.
