Cell phones that charge wirelessly, orthopedic implants that safely degrade inside the body, and a social network designed to connect those in the construction industry: these are the central concepts behind three University of Alabama start-up companies competing July 12 in a statewide business competition.
A select group of high-school students who are living in foster care, have been emancipated recently or are wards of the state will have the opportunity to participate in a pre-collegiate summer program at The University of Alabama through the nsoro Foundation of Atlanta.

More than 20 photographs depicting the civil rights movement will be displayed June 17-28 at The University of Alabama’s Supply Store in the Ferguson Center. The free exhibit, compiled from the archives of The Birmingham News, is sponsored by the UA College of Continuing Studies, The Birmingham News and AL.com. The exhibit will travel the state for the remainder of the year, representatives said.
Seth Panitch, associate professor of theatre at The University of Alabama, will take his play “Alcestis Ascending” on the road this summer to New York City, Havana and Alabama as part of his participation in creative research with the actors and dancers from UA and the Cuban El Instituto Superior de Arte .

George Wallace’s unsuccessful “Stand in the Schoolhouse Door,” UA will commemorate that historic day and celebrate 50 years of progress with two public events – a program featuring speakers and musical performances on June 11 and an interfaith prayer breakfast on June 7.
