Continuing efforts to introduce computer science to high school students, a $1 million grant was awarded to Dr. Jeff Gray, associate professor of computer science in The University of Alabama College of Engineering, to train teachers in a new computer-science course and future College Board AP exam.
University of Alabama President Judy Bonner has named long-time faculty member and administrator Dr. Joe Benson as interim provost. Benson has served as vice president for research and vice provost at UA since 2009.
The University of Alabama’s Culverhouse School of Accountancy’s undergraduate program is ranked No. 18 in Public Accounting Report’s 2012 Annual Professors Survey.

Witt, chancellor of The University of Alabama System: I am pleased to announce that Dr. Judy Bonner has been unanimously elected president of The University of Alabama effective immediately. Having had the pleasure of working with Dr. Bonner for the last 10 years, I can say firsthand that she is one of the most intelligent, well-focused and forward-thinking academic administrators in the nation. She began her career at the Capstone in 1981 and has achieved the highest measure of excellence as a faculty member, department chair, dean, executive vice president and provost, and most recently as interim president. Please join me in congratulating President Bonner on her election. She is a tremendous asset to The University of Alabama, The University of Alabama System, and the state of Alabama.

Today I have notified Chancellor Witt that I am stepping down as President of The University of Alabama. This is a decision my wife Jan and I made together after much discussion about how we can best address her health, which is the most important priority in our lives. By announcing this decision today, I hope the Board of Trustees will be in a position to take the next appropriate steps during its meeting in Tuscaloosa this week. We want to thank the faculty, staff, students, alumni and our many friends for your warm welcome. My family and I appreciate your understanding and your prayers.
The University of Alabama collegiate license tag program raised some $4.1 million during the 2012 fiscal year. Funds raised through the statewide program are used for scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students.
The University of Alabama will welcome students, parents, alumni and visitors to campus during Homecoming Week 2012, to be held from Sunday, Oct. 21, to Saturday, Oct. 27. This year’s theme is “Timeless Traditions.”
The University of Alabama Community Service Center is kicking off the 19th annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive Monday, Oct. 8, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Ferguson Plaza, Reese Phifer and Lloyd Halls.
Dr. Bharat Balasubramanian, long-time automotive technology researcher and development engineer at Daimler AG, joined the faculty in The University of Alabama College of Engineering, bringing decades of industry experience into the classroom and labs.
