UA Hosts Lecture on Honey Bees, Food Security

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama department of political science will host guest lecturer Dr. Tammy Horn, senior researcher in apiculture at Eastern Kentucky University, to speak on the critical importance of honey bee pollination to agriculture and food security from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 7, in 1092 Shelby Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Horn, who works with coal mining companies through Appalachia on projects involving land reclamation and honey bees, received a national award for pollination protection in 2010 and has been named by the National Endowment for the Humanities as Chair of Appalachian Studies at Berea College.

She is the author of “Bees in America: How the Honey Bee Shaped a Nation” and “BeeEconomy: What Women and Bees Can Teach Us about Local Trade and the Global Market.”

The political science department is part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state.
