UA Leads Nation With Six Students Named to USA Today’s All-USA College Academic Team
Six students from The University of Alabama have been named to this year’s USA Today All-USA College Academic Team – the most of any school in the nation.

It’s been 50 years since Autherine Lucy Foster became the first African American to enroll at UA in 1956. After Foster graduated from Miles College in 1952, she enrolled as a graduate student in library science at the University.
“Travel is fatal to prejudice,” a quote attributed to Mark Twain, is prominently posted atop the door of the offices of Capstone International Center, a division of Academic Affairs at The University of Alabama. The office’s décor is an eclectic mix of photographs and art from all over the world, much of it mementos from students who have studied abroad.
George McGovern and Bob Dole — two men very familiar with presidential debates — will share their political views with The University of Alabama community when they discuss current politics in a debate Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. in the Bryant Conference Center.
A total of 659 students enrolled during the summer 2004 term at The University of Alabama made the Dean’s List with academic records of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or above, or the President’s List with academic records of 4.0, announced Dr. Judy Bonner, UA provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Dr. Kevin Redding, associate professor of chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences, recently was awarded the NSF CAREER Award and the Robin Hill Award for his groundbreaking photosynthesis research.

Dr. Duane T. Johnson, associate professor of chemical and biological engineering at The University of Alabama, was recently named director of the Southeast Regional Center for the National Institute for Global Environmental Change, headquartered at UA.
