International Education Week Events at UA Include Talk by Castro’s Daughter

internatTUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama is holding a collection of interesting events and speakers on campus during International Education Week Nov. 13-17.

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The goal is to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the U.S.

This year’s events, coordinated through UA’s Capstone International Center, include:

Tuesday, Nov. 14

-Alina Fernandez speaks about her book “Castro’s Daughter,” 7-10 p.m., Ferguson Center Theater

-“Islam and the West: A Clash of Misperceptions,” panel discussion sponsored by the UA Muslim Student Association, 7-9 p.m., 205 Gorgas Library.

Wednesday, Nov. 15

-Exchange Student meeting, noon -1 p.m., 121 B.B. Comer

-Birmingham Supplementary School meeting, 3 p.m., 135 B.B. Comer, with guest speakers including Kazuma Shimazu of Honda Manufacturing of Alabama and Dr. Jane Stanfield, UA assistant vice president for international education and global outreach

-Caribbean film “Borom Sarret” (1966), 7 p.m., 109 B.B. Comer.

-International Idol, sponsored by ISA, Bama Karaoke (behind Crimson Café), 8-10 p.m. Participants need to contact ISA to pre-register or go to www.isa.ua.edu.

Thursday, Nov. 16

-Workshop for international students, “Curricular Practical Training/Optional Practical Training” 9:30-10:30 a.m., 121 B.B. Comer
-“A World of Fun,” international game night, sponsored by ISA, Ferguson Center game room, 6-10 p.m.

-Realizing the Dream, The Martin Luther King Jr. 2006 Distinguished Lecture Series featuring Dr. M.V. Krishnayya, Fulbright Scholar-in-Resident, sponsored by Stillman College and UA, 7 p.m., Stinson Auditorium, Stillman College

-Bollywood Movie, “Umrao Jaan,” Tuscaloosa Cobb Theater, $8 students, $10 UA employees
-Movie, 7:30-10 p.m., sponsored by the Spanish department, 109 B.B. Comer

Friday, Nov. 17

-Capstone International Coffee Hour-open house with home-baked goodies, Capstone International Services, 105 BB Comer Hall, 11:30 a.m. -1 p.m.

-Henna hand painting, sponsored by Indian Association of Tuscaloosa,

noon-1 p.m., 121 B.B. Comer

-Featured two-part movie, “Geography of the World-East Asia, (part one) Land and Resources, (part two) The People,” 6-7 p.m., scholar’s station, Rodgers Library for Science and Engineering
