TUSCALOOSA, Ala.—The University of Alabama’s Huxford Symphony Orchestra is preparing to hit all the right notes in this year’s 2014-2015 season, which begins Thursday, Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Frank Moody Music Building on UA’s campus.
Dr. Blake Richardson, conductor of the symphony and director of orchestral studies at the UA School of Music, says the season’s repertoire is on par with the most professional orchestras.
“This will prove to be one of the—if not the most—exciting seasons the Huxford Symphony Orchestra has ever presented to the Tuscaloosa community,” Richardson said.
The Huxford season will showcase many facets of the School of Music while flexing its muscle on works such as Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra, and Respighi’s “Pines of Rome.”
The symphony is collaborating with faculty artists, presenting the world premiere of a piece by Dr. Amir Zaheri, musical director and conductor of The University of Alabama Contemporary Ensemble, and it will join forces with the University Singers, UA Contemporary Ensemble, and the UA Opera Theatre throughout the season.
“You won’t want to miss any of our concerts this year,” Richardson said.
The Huxford Symphony Orchestra is composed of music majors as well as majors from other disciplines at UA. The orchestra is named after its benefactor, Camilla Huxford, a UA graduate.
All Huxford concerts will occur in the Concert Hall of the Moody Music Building. Tickets can be bought online at uamusic.tix.com or by phoning 205/348-7111. General admission is $10, senior (55+) tickets are $5 and student tickets are $3. For more information about the Huxford Symphony Orchestra or the School of Music, visit music.ua.edu.
