TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Homegrown Alabama, the student-led farmers market at The University of Alabama, invites songwriters of all ages and experience levels to participate in a songwriting contest and sing-off to celebrate its fifth anniversary.
Contestants are asked to compose a theme song for the market, using the phrase, “I’m homegrown.” Songs should be less than three minutes long.
The entries will be presented in a sing-off at the market on Thursday, June 7, at 3 p.m.
Participants may perform solo or as a group. One microphone will be provided. Performers should bring their own additional equipment if necessary, but it should be simple and easy to set up.
If contestants are unable to attend the sing-off, digital submissions will be accepted.
Digital submissions and videos for YouTube should be sent to homegrownalabama@gmail.com. They will then be uploaded to the Homegrown Alabama YouTube channel.
Songs will be judged based on originality, the composer’s ability to include as much information about Homegrown Alabama as possible and the best descriptions of market food and experiences.
A market favorite will be decided by a vote and an award will also be given for the best YouTube submission. Winners will receive market prizes.
Participants are asked to RSVP by June 1 at homegrownalabama@gmail.com with their intent to participate.
All submissions and recordings of the sing-off may be used by Homegrown Alabama in future promotions.
Homegrown Alabama is a nonprofit, student-led group at UA that seeks to educate students and community members about the value of local produce, as well as foster partnerships between local farmers, UA and the greater Tuscaloosa community.
