UA Chapter of NSCS Honored at National Convention

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) was recently awarded top honors at their National Leadership Summit in Austin, Texas.

The UA chapter’s project, “Operation Moral Support,” which sends greeting cards to U.S. military personnel serving abroad, was given the NSCS 2000-2001 Community Service Project of the Year Award.

Stacy Jones, the UA NSCS chapter adviser who is originally from Birmingham (zip code 35218), was also named the Adviser of the Year at the event. Jones and four UA students attended the Summit that was held in July.

As part of the NSCS national organization’s “Helping is Healing” initiative to do good works in honor of the victims of Sept. 11, more than 400 members of the organization built a playground at a local YMCA in Austin and dedicated it to one of its members that died on Sept. 11. Jones and the students who attended the Summit participated in this building project.

The UA chapter of the NSCS will induct its new members on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 3 p.m. in the Ferguson Center ballroom. Dr. Sybil Todd, UA vice president for student affairs, will be the guest speaker. As part of the event, NSCS members will also be conducting a canned food drive and participating in the Operation Moral Support campaign.
