UA ROTC Cadets to Participate in National Veterans Shrine Dedication

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A group of University of Alabama ROTC cadets will travel to Montevallo Monday, Feb. 17, to participate in the dedication of the National Veterans Shrine and Register of Honor at the American Village.

The outdoor event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 1 p.m.

Fourteen Army ROTC and 15 Air Force ROTC cadets in uniform will assist in the ceremony. The cadets will present ground secured from battlefields and monuments around the world. The soils will be placed in the base of the sculpture in front of the shrine, named “Liberty Uniting the Colonies.”

David Blair, director of UA’s Office of Veteran and Military Affairs, will represent UA, along with the cadets, at the ceremony.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions, U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus, Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey, and Alabama House Speaker Mike Hubbard are among the officials slated to help dedicate the shrine.

The National Veterans Shrine and Register of Honor is dedicated to veterans and active members of the U.S. military. According to the American Village, the event will include the unveiling of two sculptures and nine paintings depicting liberty and the service and sacrifice of veterans as well as the opening of two art galleries and three multimedia galleries.
