ESPN Anchor to Headline UA’s First Sports Communication Symposium

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Program in Sports Communication will hold its first academic research symposium Wednesday, March 20, with ESPN SportsCenter anchor Mike Hill as the keynote speaker.

Sports communication researchers representing UA’s College of Communication and Information Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, Culverhouse College of Commerce and College of Education, as well as Stillman College, will present findings through oral research presentations, posters and a film.

“It’s not just the volume of research but the range that’s exciting,” said Dr. Lance Kinney, symposium coordinator and associate professor of advertising and public relations. “We’ve got a great range of methods, from historical to qualitative to quantitative, and a great range of topics, from the Olympics to NASCAR to sports broadcasting and new media.”

Research presentations will be given from 9:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and 2:30-3:45 p.m., with a lunch break and film screening at 12:15 p.m. Hill will provide the keynote at 1:15 p.m. All events are free and open to the public and will be held in Gorgas Library room 205. A full schedule for the symposium can be found here.

“For year one, this is a tremendous slate of presenters representing a diverse number of disciplines,” said Dr. Andrew Billings, APSC director and Ronald Reagan Endowed Chair of Broadcasting in the department of telecommunication and film.  “We hope this will be a springboard for expanding the symposium beyond The University of Alabama and Tuscaloosa to include even more universities in the coming years.”

The University of Alabama Program in Sports Communication, housed in the College of Communication and Information Sciences, serves as an umbrella for sport communication-related research, teaching and activities taking place on The University of Alabama campus, with a number of faculty fellows providing mentorship for students participating in such research.
