UA to Host ‘UA Remembers: A Day of Service’ on April 21

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama will host “UA Remembers: A Day of Service” on Saturday, April 21, to remember the first anniversary of the April 27, 2011 tornadoes by bringing UA and the community together to serve others.

Faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members who are interested in participating in projects that are being planned throughout the city of Tuscaloosa can register to volunteer by visiting http://www.ua.edu/features/service/dayofservice.html.

“The Day of Service will be an opportunity to honor the lives of the six students and the UA employee who died as a result of the tornado by making a meaningful difference in our community,” said Dr. Mark Nelson, UA vice president for student affairs. “We encourage everyone to join us on April 21.”

Volunteers will meet on the UA campus the morning of April 21 and be transported to one of three work sites located along the path of the tornado. Volunteers will work from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to clean and beautify tornado-damaged areas. Afterward, they will return to the UA campus for a brief program, followed by lunch for all volunteers.

In addition to volunteering to work, those who wish to help provide materials or supplies may donate those items or make a donation to the “UA Remembers” fund. Individuals or organizations may also register to help furnish a room in a home that is being renovated through Project Blessings.

While everyone is welcome to participate in the UA Day of Service in Tuscaloosa, members of the UA family who live in other communities may wish to have a day of service or participate in a volunteer activity in their own community April 21. Those who do so are asked to provide information about their project by sending an email to dayofservice@ua.edu.

The UA Day of Service begins a week of events and remembrances that will culminate in the city of Tuscaloosa’s memorial service April 27.

Questions about the UA Day of Service may be submitted to dayofservice@ua.edu.
