TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A monthlong celebration of Hispanic-Latino culture is being held at The University of Alabama through Oct. 20 in events organized by the UA Crossroads Community Center.
Events for Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month are open to the public and they include:
Monday, Sept. 26 – Free Latin dancing lessons, hosted by the department of modern languages and classics, Spanish House and Spanish club, 6 p.m., 241 BB Comer.
Thursday, Sept. 29 – College of Communication and Information Sciences diversity forum and Women’s Resource Center host a screening of CNN’s “Latino in America 2: Olympic Hopeful,” 111 AIME, 3:30 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 29 – Crossroads Center hosts “Community Conversations, Remembering April 27,” 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., 232 Ferguson Center.
Monday, Oct. 3 – School of Social Work hosts Julia Sosa, Office of Minority Health, Alabama Department of Public Health, “Working with Latino Families,” noon, 104 Little Hall.
Tuesday, Oct. 4 – Capstone College of Nursing hosts panel discussion, “Health Prevention and Interventions in the Latino Community,” 1–2 p.m., CCN auditorium.
Wednesday, Oct. 5 – First Wednesdays at Crossroads, Global Café music and dance, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Ferguson Center TV lounge.
Wednesday, Oct. 5 – Department of modern languages and classics, Spanish House and Spanish club host film viewing, “Under the Same Moon/La Misma Luna,” (English subtitles), 6:30 p.m., 222 Lloyd Hall.
Thursday, Oct. 6 – Crossroads and Sustained Dialogue host Real Talk, 5:30 p.m., Anderson Room, Ferguson Center.
Monday, Oct.10 – Women’s Resource Center, the department of gender and race studies and WRC Student Leadership Council host documentary screening and making solidarity bracelets, 6:30 p.m., first floor game room, Ferguson Center.
Wednesday-Thursday, Oct. 19-20 – Department of gender and race studies hosts Recovering Black Women’s Voices and Lives Symposium, “Transnational Feminisms and Women in the African Diaspora,” kickoff event with Dr. M. Jacqui Alexander, Cosby Endowed Chair at Spelman College and professor of gender and women’s studies at the University of Toronto, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., Heritage Room, Ferguson Center.
Thursday, Oct. 20 – Crossroads hosts “Latino-Latina in America: Coming from where I’m from,” community conversation, 5:30- 6:30 p.m., 232 Ferguson Center.
