Bama Grad Expo to Bring Top Prospective Graduate Students to Campus

TUSCALOOSA , Ala. — Fifty top prospective graduate students from across the country will visit The University of Alabama campus Nov. 13-15 for the College of Arts and Sciences’ Bama Grad Expo.

The students will learn about degrees offered, visit with current graduate students and faculty and also tour the campus.

Dr. Robert H. Findlay, chair of the faculty committee organizing the event, said the College received 114 applications from students vying for one of the 50 seats available.

Most applicants were from the Southeast, but students from across the country applied, he said.

“We’re happy to have this many qualified undergraduates interested in investigating The University of Alabama as a potential place to attend graduate school,” said Findlay, who is the Bishop Professor of Biology in the department of biological sciences. “We’re looking forward to meeting them all.”

Admission to the Bama Grad Expo was open to all undergraduate juniors and seniors seeking a rewarding graduate experience with strong faculty mentoring in research, scholarship and creative activities. Students from under-represented populations, McNair Scholars and first generation college students were especially encouraged to participate.

Each applicant was asked to specify which a department within the College they would be interested in visiting. Findlay said the 50 students who attend the Expo will be visiting a total of 16 departments.

Dr. Robert Olin, dean of the College, said he hopes the students attending the Expo will enjoy their time on campus and choose UA for their graduate education.

“We’re committed to diversity in all of our academic programs, and we’re excited to be hosting the Bama Grad Expo,” he said.

UA’s College of Arts and Sciences is the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships on the USA Today Academic All American Team.
