Students, Pet Lovers to Take Part in UA’s Paw Fest and Dog Splash Events

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama students living in Burke Residence Hall are hosting Paw Fest, a carnival-style event to raise money for the West Alabama Humane Society, on Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 7-9 p.m.

Paw Fest will be held in the Burke courtyard where participants can visit game booths, leash and collar decorating stations, and learn more about the West Alabama Humane Society from volunteers at the local shelter.

Admission to the carnival is free and open to Burke residents and others on campus interested in volunteering and caring for animals. Organizers ask that participants make and decorate a dog treat from supplies provided.

An inter-dorm competition between Burke East, Burke West and Parham called Pennies for Puppies for the most pocket change from students will also take place to raise money for the shelter.  In addition to Pennies for Puppies, material donations such as leashes, collars and other dog and cat accessories will be accepted.

Organizers hope Paw Fest will raise awareness for the local animal shelter as well as encourage students to volunteer their time.

Another campus event to benefit animals is Dog Splash at the Outdoor Pool Complex on Sunday, Sept.  27.

Sponsored by University Recreation and T-Town PAWS, Dog Splash allows dogs to swim in the UA Outdoor Pool Complex.

The fee is $5 per dog.  Dogs weighing 25 pounds or less will be allowed in the pool from 1-2:30 p.m.  Dogs over 25 pounds will have pool time from 2:30-5 p.m.

Dogs must be friendly and current on all vaccinations.  When not in the pool, all dogs must be kept on a leash.
