TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. James A. Hall has been named dean of The University of Alabama School of Social Work. Dr. Judy Bonner, UA executive vice president and provost, announced the appointment, which is effective July 1.
Hall replaces Dr. James “Ike” Adams Jr., who served as dean for the past nine years.
“Dr. Hall is well qualified to lead and grow the UA School of Social Work,” said Bonner. “We look forward to much success under his leadership.”
“I am extremely excited about the prospect of building on what the faculty, staff and Dr. Adams have established,” said Hall. “I am honored to have this opportunity to serve as dean.”
Hall has been a professor and chair of the doctoral program in social work since joining the faculty in August 2008. Before coming to UA, he spent 16 years on the faculty of the School of Social Work and the Colleges of Nursing, Medicine, and Public Health at the University of Iowa.
Hall’s research interests include the development and evaluation of interventions for prevention and treatment of substance abuse, co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders, and individual and family-based social work practice for adolescents.
He has been awarded more than $15 million in external funds for research and currently reviews grant applications for the Center for Scientific Review.
Hall earned his bachelor’s degree in social welfare from the University of Minnesota, his master’s degree in social work from the University of Chicago, and his doctorate in social welfare from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
