TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Rep. Artur Davis will be presenting the inaugural University  of Alabama Honors College Distinguished Lecture Wednesday, April 15, at 4 p.m. in the Ferguson Theater.

He will discuss “Vital Signs: Social Responsibility and the Prognosis for 21st Century Global Health.”  Davis (D-7th District), a 2010 Alabama gubernatorial candidate, will assess the fundamentals of health care reform in the wake of the transition into the Obama presidency.

The lecture is the first in what will be an annual event of a student-developed and organized lecture series.

“The event, which initially began as a disorganized student conversation on the prospects for health care reform in America, has coalesced into a lecture/discussion nexus that seeks to bring together highly distinguished lecturers on important issues with students interested in actively engaging their political and social environment,” said Matthew May, student chair of the series.

Davis will speak on the prospects for change in the American health care infrastructure at a time in history when many have deemed health care reform to have reached a veritable peak in political tractability, May said.

In the week following the lecture, an organized policy discussion will take place. Details on the discussion will be announced at the lecture. The event, sponsored by the Honors College and Sustained Dialogue, is open to the public.
