UA Professor, Graduate Students Receive Broadcast Awards

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. Jennings Bryant, Reagan Chair of Broadcasting in the College of Communication and Information Sciences at The University of Alabama, was one of four to receive the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Broadcast Education Association.

Doctoral students Courtney Carpenter, Ginger Miller Loggins, Jie Xu and Wes Fondren received first place in the Debut paper competitions for their paper titled “The Impact of Entertainment Variables on News Enjoyment and Recall.” Yinjiao Ye, a doctoral student, received first place in the Open paper competition for her paper, which is part of her dissertation, titled “Television Viewing and Life Satisfaction: The Effects of Perceived Health Risks and Perceived Self-Efficacy in Maintaining Personal health on Viewer’s Life.”

Bobby Puppione, a graduate student in the department of telecommunications and film, received one of the two prestigious Walter Patterson Scholarships.

The recipients were presented with their awards at the BEA convention on Thursday, April 27 in Las Vegas. BEA is the professional association for professors, industry professionals and graduate students who are interested in teaching and research related to electronic media and multimedia enterprises.

The College of Communication & Information Sciences at The University of Alabama is among the most prestigious communication colleges in the nation. C&IS consistently is ranked among the top 10 in number of doctoral degrees awarded and in many of its research programs. C&IS graduates have won four of the six Pulitzer Prizes awarded to UA alumni, and the forensics and debate squad, housed within the College, has garnered 14 national championships.
