Dr. Matthew Barnidge specializes in emerging media and contentious political communication with an international perspective. His research looks at how emergent online communication practices connect individuals with each other and with elite social and political institutions in order to understand how the emerging media environment promotes (or discourages) public conversations about controversial political topics. More specifically, his work has focused on topics such as political expression and disagreement in social media environments, second screening practices, contemporary content creation practices, and citizen journalism.
