The University of Alabama’s Gamma Phi Beta sorority invites the public to participate in its first philanthropic chili cook off event from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, on the side lawn of the Canterbury Chapel Episcopal Church, on campus.

The University of Alabama’s student-led organization and nonprofit literary journal NANO Fiction invites the public to its two-part reading series, Five at 5, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 and Sunday, Oct. 20, at 5 Bar in downtown Tuscaloosa. The event, organized by Nano Fiction founder and UA graduate student Kirby Johnson, is designed to introduce emerging short fiction writers to the Tuscaloosa community. Admission is free.
The University of Alabama Graduate School will host Graduate School Preview Day at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in the Ferguson Student Center on campus.
From academics to athletics, students at The University of Alabama are known to approach their goals with a championship spirit. On Sept. 15, two students will take that spirit to the stage of the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City, N.J., where they will compete for the crown, scholarships and a way to promote their youth-based social platforms across the country.
A total of 414 students enrolled during the 2013 summer semester at The University of Alabama were named to the Dean’s List with an academic record of 3.5 (or above) or the President’s List with an academic record of 4.0 (all A’s).
