UA to Host Halfway Party for Beat Auburn Beat Hunger Food Drive

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Community Service Center is throwing a Halfway Party for the Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food collection campaign on Monday, Nov. 6 from noon-2 p.m. in the Ferguson Plaza.

The Beat Auburn Beat Hunger “food fight” is an annual service competition between students at UA and Auburn. The competition capitalizes on the rivalry that exists between the two schools to help alleviate hunger around the state.

The UA Halfway Party will include appearances by Big Al, Greg Thomas from B101.7 FM, the UA Afro-American Gospel Choir, Jake and Steve from WVUA-FM, and Craig Young, the executive director of the West Alabama Food Bank.

All donations from the Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food collection will be given to the West Alabama Food Bank to distribute in nine West Alabama counties, including Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marion, Pickens, Sumter and Tuscaloosa.

The food drive will be under way until Nov. 16, the Thursday before the Iron Bowl.

Students are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items at the Halfway Party or at any UA residence hall, the Ferguson Center, the donation truck located in the cul-de-sac near B.B. Comer Hall and at the West Alabama Food Bank.

Food collection is measured in pounds. The winning school will be announced at the Iron Bowl on Nov. 18. There are also six intra-campus competitive categories for donations: fraternities and sororities, student organizations, residence halls, faculty and staff, individuals and community donations.

Students, faculty and staff can also give monetary donations from their Action Cards at all Bama Dining locations. Bama Dining will match up to $2,000 that is donated from Action Cards.

Beat Auburn Beat Hunger is sponsored by the UA Community Service Center, the West Alabama Food Bank, Two Men and a Truck, and Bama Dining.
