UA’s CHES Honors Usdan with Rowland Teaching Award

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama College of Human Environmental Sciences honored Dr. Stuart Usdan with the 2014 Joseph S. Rowland Teaching Excellence Award during recent homecoming activities on campus.

The award is given annually to recognize CHES teaching excellence.

Recipients of the award are those faculty members who exhibit mastery of subject matter and create a stimulating and challenging learning environment while demonstrating empathy and respect for students.

Usdan is an associate dean for graduate studies, research and assessment and a professor in the department of health science. He has been at UA since 2005, teaching both undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in various subjects, including personal health, community health, basic principles of health promotion, health promotion techniques, research methods, public health policy and more.

He has served the University as a member of the Mobile Youth and Poverty Study Advisory Board, Council of Assistant and Associate Deans, University Alcohol and Drug Working Group and the Institutional Review Board for Protection of Human Subjects, as well as a participant in several search committees. He has also served as chair of several academic committees.

He is professionally affiliated with numerous organizations and associations, including the Society of Public Health Education, the American Public Health Association and the American College Health Association.

Additionally, Usdan has authored and co-authored numerous books and chapters and articles for such prestigious journals as the American Journal of Health Studies and American Journal of Health Behavior.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in health sciences from University of Arizona, his master’s degree in health promotion and behavior from University of Georgia and his doctorate degree in health education and health promotion from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and The University of Alabama.
