UA School of Social Work Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. David Becerra, assistant professor of social work at Arizona State University School of Social Work, will deliver a lecture in observance of Hispanic Heritage Month Monday, Sept. 22, at The University of Alabama School of Social Work.

Becerra will deliver “Immigration Policy and Latino Well-Being,” at noon in 104 Little Hall.

Becerra has worked with Latino youth and families in the Southwest for several years. His research examines academic success, substance use and poverty among Latino youth.

The lecture is part of the School of Social Work’s Colloquium Series that brings speakers to campus to share expertise with UA faculty, staff, students and guests.

His lecture, and subsequent lectures in the series, will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in 104 Little Hall.

The series will continue through the fall semester with the following speakers:

Oct. 13: Dr. Miriam Raskin, professor emerita of social work, George Mason University. She will discuss, “Contemporary Issues in Field Education.”

Nov. 17: Melanie Bridgeforth, executive director of VOICES for Alabama’s Children. She will discuss, “VOICES for Alabama’s Children: Priorities for Change.”

The lectures are free and open to the University community and the general public. Continuing Education Units will be available.
