SAFETY

Weather permitting, the University will test UA Alerts, the emergency public address system and digital signage at 11:55 a.m. the first Wednesday of each month. The test will last approximately 30 seconds and should not be disruptive. Immediately following at noon, the Tuscaloosa Emergency Management Agency will test the outdoor tornado sirens, weather permitting.

Students should update their contact information on myBama to ensure they receive the UA Alerts messages. Students who currently receive the alerts but would prefer to be contacted differently will need to revise their contact information. To view and make changes to information online, students can click here.

The University of Alabama’s 24-hour hazing and harassment hotline at 205-348-HALT (4258) allows students, parents or others to report incidents of discrimination, harassment, hazing or any kind of unhealthy behavior. An individual calling the hotline can leave a confidential message with the Office of the Dean of Students. Callers to the hotline are anonymous. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Today is the deadline for undergraduate students to register their projects for UA’s Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference. The conference will be held April 17 at the Bryant Conference Center. The conference provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to compete for cash prizes while showcasing the research, art or other creative activity that they are doing under the supervision of faculty mentors. To participate, an undergraduate student must register his or her project by submitting an application form, including an abstract describing the project. A new document, “UAct: Working together to create an ethical community defined by respect and civility,” has been placed on the UA website at http://www.ua.edu/uact. The document provides UA students, employees and visitors with a list of reporting channels they can use to report incidences of illegal discrimination, harassment, sexual assault, sexual violence, retaliation, threat assessment or fraud. Using information from the site, any UA student, employee, job applicant or visitor who has concerns can seek the assistance of the appropriate University official designated in the UAct document.

UAct was created as part of UA’s commitment to provide a safe environment for students, employees and campus visitors.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

Leadership UA is accepting applications from sophomores, juniors and seniors. The goal of the Leadership UA is to develop effective and ethical leaders at The University of Alabama who are prepared to be global leaders in a variety of fields. Capstone International Services seeks qualified and motivated international and domestic students to apply to be a part of the International Peer Advisory Council for the 2014-15 academic year. IPAC is a volunteer-based organization designed to assist newly arrived international students at UA with cultural adjustment and to provide an opportunity for intercultural exchange among students. The deadline to apply to be a member of the Yell Crew is April 8 at 2 p.m. Applications are found at http://fye.ua.edu/yell2.cfm. The Yell Crew is a group of student leaders who lead the freshman student section at all home football games. They lead the freshmen in UA game-day traditions, while promoting a fun, loud, spirit-filled atmosphere.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

UA Students in Jim Brown’s MKT 410 Managing Innovation class are creating a new and innovative product, an ultraportable printer. They have created a survey to ascertain what other college students would want in a portable printer. ATHLETICS

EVENTS 

The University of Alabama will recognize the achievements of outstanding students and faculty during Honors Week activities on campus April 1-6. The Tapping on the Mound ceremony, a tradition since the early 1900s, will be held April 4 at 1:30 p.m. on the mound at the west side of the Quad (rain location will be Moody Music Building concert hall). University honoraries Omicron Delta Kappa, Mortar Board, Blue Key National Honor Society and Anderson Society will induct members. Click here for more information.

The Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations at The University of Alabama will honor the late public relations legend Betsy Plank by hosting a national celebration, Betsy Day, in honor of her 90th birthday, April 3. Betsy Day will involve a national social media campaign using #BetsyDay, video competition and a Betsy Day panel hosted by the center. Students, professionals and educators are invited to interact online from now through April 3. Use #AskBetsyPlank to ask any industry-related questions via Twitter for the Plank Center board members to answer. The video contest is open to all public relations and communications student organizations to showcase their leadership skills with the prompt “How Do You Lead like Betsy Plank?” All video entries must be less than one minute in length and submitted to plankcenter@gmail.com by noon on Betsy Day, April 3. Spectrum and Capstone Alliance will host an NOH8 photo shoot Sunday, April 6, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in 120 Lloyd Hall. NOH8 campaign is a not-for-profit organization that visually represents the demand to end gender and sexual inequalities. The photo session is open to the public. Solo photos are $40; group or couple photos are $25 per person.

The Graduate Parent Support Program and the Undergraduate Parent Support Program will host the third annual Summer Camp Expo April 12 on the Quad from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The expo will provide families with the opportunity to explore and interact with local summer camps and programs. Delta Sigma Pi national professional commerce fraternity will host a 5,000 meters race on April 5 at 10 a.m. at the Student Recreation Center. Proceeds benefit Temporary Emergency Services. The 5k race is also being held in memory of Juston Martin, a UA business student who recently passed away in a car accident. Portions of the proceeds will be donated to a scholarship fund that Delta Sigma Pi is creating in Martin’s honor. Volunteer hours are available for this event, and two Panhellenic points will be awarded to qualifying participants. More information: Jenny Corcoran at jmcorcoran@crimson.ua.edu.
