SAFETY
The University of Alabama’s 24-hour hazing and harassment hotline at 205-348-HALT (4258) allows students, parents or others to report incidents of discrimination, harassment, hazing or any kind of unhealthy behavior. An individual calling the hotline can leave a confidential message with the Office of the Dean of Students. Callers to the hotline are anonymous. ANNOUNCEMENTS
Two spaces designated for people who are returning materials to Gorgas Library are now located in the parking area behind Smith Hall. They are located next to the bike rack and have a 30-minute time limit. These two spaces replace the spaces that had been available in the south Ferguson parking lot.
The Capstone Inspiring Educator Award recognizes high school teachers who have inspired UA students to achieve their academic and career goals through outstanding teaching, mentoring and support. Each UA graduating senior (candidate for undergraduate degree) is invited to nominate a teacher from his or her high school by visiting http://www.inspiringteacher.ua.edu. Nominations will be evaluated by a UA committee representing faculty, staff, students and high school teachers, with final selection by the Office for Academic Affairs. Winners will be recognized during UA Spring Commencement activities on May 3. The deadline to submit a nomination is March 5. The UA Academic Advisors Association is accepting nominations for the Outstanding Commitment to Advising Award. The award recognizes the importance of academic advising and is given to an outstanding faculty advisor or professional advisor who has made significant contributions in the field of academic advising at UA. Students, faculty and staff should remember when walking, driving or biking across campus: Stay on Your Side. The safety campaign, which began this past fall, is geared to reminding the campus community to use crosswalks, sidewalks and streets appropriately. Doing so keeps traffic flowing and ensures travelers get to their destination safely.
STUDENT AFFAIRS
The Student Judiciary of the Student Government Association is accepting applications for associate justices and clerks. Assisted by three clerks, the chief justice and the 21 associate justices have jurisdiction over a variety of cases, including parking-ticket appeals, football-ticket-penalty appeals, and nonacademic violations of the Code of Student Conduct. Candidates should be reliable, responsible and principled undergraduate, graduate or law students committed to supporting the philosophies of the Code of Student Conduct, the Academic Honor Code, the Code of Academic Conduct and all other guidelines of conduct set forth by the University. The University of Alabama Crossroads Community Center invites the UA campus and community to participate in events throughout February during African-American History Month. This year’s campus celebration promotes recognition of the contributions of African-American culture to area communities and the nation. The Alabama Center for the Book invites UA students to the next event in the lunchtime speaker series spotlighting recent works by Alabama writers. Lila Quintero Weaver will talk about “Darkroom: a Memoir in Black and White,” her autobiographical novel about growing up Latina in the Black Belt in the 1960s. All students are invited to hear pre-eminent UA science faculty present a series of lightning talks on high-interest topics in science that shape our understanding of the world. The 10-minute talks will be held on the first floor of the Rodgers Library for Science and Engineering outside the Nightingale Room every Thursday at 2 p.m. during the month of February. UA’s Afro-American Gospel Choir will perform a benefit concert Saturday, Feb. 8, at 4 p.m. at the Hightown Church of God at 3926 28th Ave. in Northport.
