TUSCALOOSA, Ala.— Former U.S. Ambassador Lino Gutierrez will add another feather in his cap when he returns to his alma mater to be named a Distinguished Visiting Fellow of International Strategic Studies at The University of Alabama Monday, Sept. 30.
Gutierrez, who earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University, served as an ambassador to Nicaragua under Bill Clinton and also as ambassador to Argentina under George W. Bush. In addition, he’s spent 29 years in public service, representing the interests of the United States in Latin and South America.
“He’s had an extremely distinguished career in foreign service,” said Dr. Larry Clayton, UA professor emeritus of history. “He’s really contributed a lot to his country. He will have a lot to share with our students about opportunities in government and foreign service.”
Gutierrez will share some of that expertise with students in history, political science and business as he visits the Capstone.
“The next week or so we’ll be talking about political forces and how they affect international business, and this is a rare opportunity for someone who has ‘been there and done that’ to address our class,” said Dr. Jase Ramsey, assistant professor of marketing. Gutierrez will address Ramsey’s international business class Tuesday.
He will also speak to Dr. Steve I. Schwab’s history class on “Foreign Military Interventions in Latin America” during his visit, as well as participate in a round-table discussion with students in various majors whose inclination may interest them in foreign service.
