THROUGH THE DOORS

Using the theme “Through the Doors,” The University of Alabama is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of UA with a series of activities and events throughout 2013. A special series of events is also planned for June 8-11. A special website devoted to the anniversary has been launched at http://www.throughthedoors.ua.edu. Those interested can check the site often for calendar events, special remembrances and other highlights of the year and the past 50 years.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Undergraduate students of all majors are invited to enter UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference scheduled for April 16 at the Bryant Conference Center. Students can compete for cash prizes and earn practical experience in defending or performing their research or artistic projects before judges. Students can register online at http://urca.ua.edu. March 22 is the deadline to register and submit a project abstract. Students can nominate individuals for the UA AAA Academic Advisor Excellence Award. The award recognizes the importance of academic advising and is given to an outstanding faculty advisor, professional advisor or someone with responsibility for advising who has made significant contributions to the field of academic advising. Applications for UA Women Leaders in Action are due Friday, March 1, by midnight. UA Women Leaders in Action brings collegiate women together to help develop their leadership skills, expose them to critical issues and inspire them to make a difference on campus, in the local community, in the state and nationally. Three to four women of freshman or sophomore standing who demonstrate leadership potential will be selected. After participation in a summer institute, the UA Women Leaders in Action cohort will develop and implement a community action project during the Fall Semester 2013 and Spring Semester 2014. One of the University’s highest priorities is the safety and well-being of its students. Students can refer to the Safer Living Guide for safety precautions to take on and off campus. Students may also sign up for GUARDIAN, which allows students to use their cellphones to notify University police at the touch of a button if they need emergency assistance or to set a passive timer based on their expected arrival times at a destination on campus or in the Tuscaloosa area. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Students can make a difference in the community and earn 3 hours of honors credit through PlanFirst, a service-learning course in which students will focus on the various facets of Tuscaloosa’s planning department. Students in PlanFirst will spend an initial six weeks learning about the city of Tuscaloosa, general planning principles, cooperation and conflict communication, and the rebuilding process. Students will also spend six weeks serving and shadowing city of Tuscaloosa planning staff. The course is open to UA students of any major who are in good standing with the Honors College and have an interest in some aspect of city planning. EVENTS

Auditions for the next Bama Idol are in progress. All registered UA students are eligible to audition on any of the following dates and at the following locations: Feb. 26, Harris Hall, 7 p.m.; Feb. 27, Presidential Village, seventh floor, 7-9 p.m.; and Feb. 28, Presidential Village, seventh floor, 6-9 p.m.

Auditions require a 30-second a cappella performance. A total of eight finalists will be selected to perform in the Bama Idol finale to be held on March 13 at 8 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Theater. More information: bamaidol@gmail.com.

UA students are invited to participate in Higher Education Day in Montgomery, Ala., on Thursday, Feb. 28. Students and others across the state will gather on the Capitol steps to raise awareness for funding higher education in Alabama. UA students will leave from the Student Recreation Center at 7 a.m. that day and return at 3 p.m. Students can register for the free event at http://sga.ua.edu. The third annual Alabama Modern Language Conference will be held March 1-2 in the Ferguson Center from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. each day. The conference will feature participants from UA and other U.S. universities. The theme of the conference is “Redefining Borders: Bridging the Gap between Languages, Literature and Cultures.” Keynote speakers will be Texas Tech University professor Hafid Gafaiti and McDaniel College professor Thomas Deveny. UA Outdoor Recreation will lead a rock-climbing trip in Jamestown, Ark. Participants will leave Tuscaloosa Friday, March 1, and return Sunday, March 3. All gear and instruction is included. More information: 348-7045.

The sixth annual Run for Roses 5K walk-run will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, with registration at 1 p.m. The cost is $10. Registration and the start of the race will be at the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority house. The event will feature a live band, food, T-shirts and prizes for the top three finishers. A free community screening of “Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare” will be held March 3 at 3 p.m. at the Bama Theatre in downtown Tuscaloosa. A panel discussion will follow the screening, which is being sponsored by several UA organizations. The documentary was an official selection of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Tide Talks is a new student organization at The University of Alabama that will showcase student experiences and triumphs on stage. The first event will be held March 5 at 7 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Theater. Four revolutionary and inspirational students from campus will present their exciting perspectives in their fields. Graduating students may visit a number of vendors during the Graduation Celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 6-7 at the Ferguson Center Plaza and March 8 in the Ferguson Center lobby. Students can place orders for class rings and graduation announcements and order their caps and gowns, diploma frames, and hoods (for master’s and doctoral students). The Women’s Resource Center will present the third Brown Bag Lecture Series on March 6 at noon in  360 Ferguson Center. Dr. Pamela Foster, assistant professor in the College of Community Health Sciences, will speak on the topic of “Women’s Empowerment Strategies in HIV/AIDS Prevention.” Puneet Gill, UA doctoral student, will speak on the topic of “Sex Education in Life Science Classrooms.” Attendees should bring their lunches. UA students are invited to hear UA history professor Dr. Michael Mendle lecture on “Absolutely the Most Important Thing You Know Nothing About: Shorthand and Civilization in 17th-Century England.” The lecture will be held March 6 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. Creative Campus and the Career Center invite students to UA’s first Creative Careers fair on March 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Heritage Room of the Ferguson Center. The fair will provide students with resources for and advice about successful creative vocations. Featured workshops include Crafting a Creative Résumé, Delivering the Perfect Elevator Speech, Budgeting for a Sustainable Arts Lifestyle, and Matching Personality with Career Path. The annual UA Dance Marathon will be held March 9 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center. Proceeds will benefit children who are experiencing various health issues. The “no-sitting celebration of life” is filled with sports, competition and excitement. At various times during the event, participants will hear from the children and families who will benefit from the proceeds. A “Safe Spring Break Student Health Fair” will be held March 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ferguson Center Plaza. Participants can receive free vaccinations, health screenings and information about campus and non-campus organizations that are can assist students with their physical and mental well-being. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Community Service Center is asking for gift cards to send to Hattiesburg, Miss., and the University of Southern Mississippi community to help purchase items needed following a Feb. 10 tornado that damaged parts of that city and the USM campus. Students can bring gift cards to the CSC office at 346 Ferguson Center. CSC is also planning to take a group of students to Hattiesburg in March to help with relief efforts. Join University Programs and UA’s Up ’til Dawn organization for Dodgeball for a Purpose in support of the fight against childhood cancer. Teams of six to eight students can click here to register.
