UA Summer Camp Teaches Middle-Schoolers Money Management Skills

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Summer camps often have campers managing time for kickball and swimming, but one camp on The University of Alabama campus can have goers managing money and budgets.

Camp Cash, a two-week, weekday program beginning Monday, June 13 and concluding Friday, June 24, teaches the importance of money management and budgeting. Students must be between the ages of 11 and 14 and have an A/B average.

According to Jan Brakefield, assistant professor of consumer sciences in the College of Human Environmental Sciences and leader of the camp, a summer camp focused on money management really pays off for both the student and the family.

“Teaching concepts like delayed gratification and building a savings account can save the family money now, but, more importantly, lead young people down a path of wise financial planning in the future,” said Brakefield.

Total cost of the camp is $175 and includes course materials, snacks and a Camp Cash t-shirt. Contact Brakefield at 205/348-8722 or jbrakefi@ches.ua.edu to enroll.
