TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Montgomery Performing Arts Centre will open its doors to Huck Finn and all his friends this April with a production of the American musical “Big River” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 15.
The University of Alabama’s department of theatre and dance is staging the performance.The musical features music and lyrics by award-winning country artist Roger Miller and a book by William Hauptman.
Based on Mark Twain’s 1884 novel, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” “Big River” premiered on Broadway in 1985, sweeping the Tonys that year with seven awards including Best Musical. Huckleberry Finn helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River.
Follow Huck’s journey as favorite Twain characters come to life, including the Widow Douglas, the uproarious King and Duke, the sinister Pap Finn, the lovely Mary Jane Wilkes and Huck’s partner in crime, Tom Sawyer.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students and children. The department is part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships on the USA Today Academic All American Team.
