Winter break is almost here, and visions of sugarplums might already be dancing in your head. Whether you’re heading over the river and through the woods to grandma’s house or dreaming of a white Christmas somewhere far away, don’t let the Grinch steal your holiday cheer while you’re gone.
Before you dash away, take a few simple steps to keep your residence safe.
If You Live in a UA Residence Hall
- Clear out perishables and trash. Leftover food and garbage will make your room smell like anything but holiday cheer when you return.
- Unplug electrical appliances (except for your refrigerator).
- Turn off lights.
- Lock windows and close blinds.
- Leave your heat/AC on low to prevent temperature issues.
- Keep belongings away from heating/cooling units for safety.
- Lock your door and take your key! If you forget your key, you will be charged for a lockout when you return.
Residence Halls will close on Saturday, Dec. 13. Burke, Parham, Bryce Lawn, The Highlands, Bryant, Rotary House and East Edge do not close for winter break.
If You Live in an Apartment or House
- Lock all doors and windows. Don’t forget sliding doors and balconies.
- Unplug appliances and electronics to reduce fire risk and save energy.
- Set your thermostat to around 55°F to prevent frozen pipes.
- Secure valuables out of sight or in a safe; take small electronics with you.
- Pause mail and package deliveries or ask a friend to collect them.
- Use light timers to make your home look occupied.
- Notify your property manager if you rent, and provide emergency contact info.
- Avoid posting travel plans online until you’re back.
If You’re Staying Home
Spread the holiday cheer by looking out for your neighbors who are traveling. Report any suspicious activity to your local law enforcement. A little vigilance goes a long way toward keeping your community safe.
