This September, UA is dedicating an entire month to sophomore-focused activities, giving second-year students a chance to enjoy all the University offers. The month is just a kickoff to a year’s worth of events and opportunities tailored for this class.
1. It fights the sophomore slump.
Freshman year, college is new and exciting, and resources are plentiful. But after the first-year excitement wears off, returning second-year students can find themselves facing new life changes, financial pressures and academic expectations that may affect their confidence and sense of momentum. For second-year students, Sophomore September offers support and connection as they navigate the next stage of their UA experience.
2. It’s brand new.
Sophomore September evolved out of Tide 2, a yearlong sophomore leadership experience at UA that is entering its fourth year. But something was missing. While Tide 2 emphasizes leadership and getting involved, sophomores also wanted more chances to connect with friends. Sophomore September provides more opportunities to do just that.
3. It’s eventful.
From a kickoff event to meet other sophomores, learn how to get involved and test UA trivia knowledge, to a leadership fair, there will be plenty of events in September to get second-year students engaged. Pick up a sophomore survival kit at Organization Takeover, decorate a class T-shirt at the arts and crafts event, or take in a film with friends at movie night. Not to mention a sophomore table at the book fair, leadership live and sophomore spirit pop-ups, and more.
4. September? Service is all fall.
As the weather turns cooler, sophomores will have opportunities to serve others. Donate canned food items to beat hunger but also beat freshmen in the first ever Beat Auburn, Beat Hunger competition against Freshman Forum in October. In November, serve the Tuscaloosa community during Sophomore Service Week. Sophomores will be encouraged to sign up for at least one service day at one of the over 20 Serving Bama sites. Transportation included!
5. And a send-off in April.
To cap the academic year, Sophomore Send-Off Week happens In April with an event each day. Attend UA’s first ever Halfway There Celebration to commemorate and celebrate the fact that sophomores are halfway there to graduation. And the conclusion of the week will be a cookout with UA First to celebrate sophomores entering their junior year and freshmen entering their sophomore year.
