Staying Safe on Campus: How You Can Help Keep UA Secure

September is National Campus Safety Awareness Month, and you play a role in keeping The University of Alabama campus safe.

As part of this month’s observance, UA is recognizing SeeSayDay on Sept. 25, a national day of action that promotes awareness of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s “If You See Something, Say Something®” campaign. The initiative encourages individuals to report suspicious activity to local authorities to help prevent crime and terrorism.

If you see something, say something.

Recognizing Suspicious Activity

Suspicious activity is any observed behavior that could indicate a threat to public safety. According to DHS, examples include:

  • Attempts to gain information about security procedures or infrastructure.
  • Unauthorized access to restricted areas.
  • Leaving unattended bags or packages in public spaces.
  • Individuals appearing to surveil buildings or security systems.
  • Attempting to acquire materials that could be used in an attack.

It’s important to remember that race, ethnicity, gender, religion or other personal characteristics are not indicators of suspicious behavior. Reports should be based solely on actions and context.

How to Report

At UA, suspicious activity should be reported directly to UAPD at 205-348-5454. When you call, tell the dispatcher who or what you saw; when you saw it; where it occurred; and why it’s suspicious.

In an emergency, always call 911.
