As the sun sets on another summer at the Capstone and we gear up for the fall semester, here’s a look back at the top UA headlines that made waves this summer.
Welcome, Dr. Mohler!

In June, Dr. Peter J. Mohler was named the 30th president of The University of Alabama and officially started July 15. Mohler, a distinguished leader with over 20 years of experience in higher education, is already settled in.
New Name, Opportunities for College of Arts and Sciences
Alumnus J. Frank Barefield Jr. made a $35 million gift commitment to name the College of Arts and Sciences. The gift provides the College with a fully discretionary endowment that allows its leadership to “act quickly, think boldly and lead purposefully.”
Fulbright Stars
Every year, UA students and faculty are honored with awards from the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program and this summer was no different. Fifteen UA students were offered various scholarships. Additionally, Dr. M.N.V. Ravi Kumar was selected for the Fulbright-Nehru Scholar Award to conduct vital health research in Hyderabad, India.
Students Shine at Miss Alabama

The annual Miss Alabama competition took place in June and 10 UA students competed with each of them earning scholarships through the donor-funded program and three advancing to the top five.
New Collegiate License Plate
In May, UA unveiled the new look of its Alabama vehicle tag to much excitement. The new design featured the classic Vault A logo, which has seen a resurgence in popularity. Net proceeds from tag sales support a scholarship for in-state students.
New Health Care Partnerships

Building on its commitment to fostering health care in rural communities, the University announced two new partnerships with DCH Health System this summer. The first will boost health care workforce development in the local community. The second initiative established a Supportive Care Clinic for patients with serious illnesses as well as their families and caretakers.
Dean’s List Students Named for UA Spring 2025
Over 14,000 students were recognized for having a GPA of 3.5 or above on the spring 2025 dean’s and president’s lists.
