5 Student-Athletes to Represent Adapted Athletics in Paris

UPDATE: Four University of Alabama student-athletes and two alumni brought home medals at the 2024 Summer Paralympic Games in Paris.

Students Abby Bauleke, Ixhelt Gonzalez, Bailey Moody and Lindsey Zurbrugg along with alumna Emily Oberst won silver medals for Team USA in women’s wheelchair basketball.

UA Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Head Coach Ryan Hynes and Sports Medicine Director Alex Curry helped secure the victory for Team USA serving as assistant coach and athletic trainer, respectively.

Alumna Annika Zeyen won two bronze medals in paracycling competitions.


TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Five student-athletes in The University of Alabama’s Adapted Athletics programs will be representing Teams USA and Great Britain in the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris. Ten UA alumni will also be competing in Paris.

The Paralympic Games take place Aug. 28 through Sept. 8. Complete schedules and more information can be found on the Paralympics website.

UA-Paralympian Fast Facts

  • Coach Ryan Hynes will be Team USA’s Women’s assistant coach. He is the current UA Women’s Wheelchair Basketball head coach.
  • Alex Curry will be the head athletic trainer for Team USA. She is the current UA Adapted Athletics sports medicine director. 
  • Darrell Hargreaves, associate director of facility operations for University Recreation at UA, will serve again as a referee for the Games. He has been refereeing professionally since 2009 and his first big tournament was the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.
