5 Things to Know About UA Recycling

UA Recycling conducts over 5,000 recycling stops in and around campus per month. Last fiscal year the University community recycled over 1,300 tons of recycling materials. UA faculty, staff and students play a crucial role in fostering a green and sustainable University community.

Recycling Community Drop-off

The community drop-off is located at 1115 14th St. in Tuscaloosa. It is open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.-noon on Saturdays. This drive-up self-service provides bins for cardboard, paper, plastics #1 and #2, aluminum cans and tin cans. There is also a glass container on site.

What Campus Recycles

UA Recycling bins are located in every building on campus for collection of paper, cardboard, plastic (#1 and #2 only) and aluminum cans. UA also recycles electronics, scrap metal of all types, pallets and toner cartridges. Dining halls provide compostable materials and grease. Automotive Services recycles motor oil and car batteries. Light bulbs can be recycled through Environmental Health and Safety.

How to Recycle on Campus

Recycling starts at the desks of faculty and staff members by providing desk side bins, which provide convenient locations to store recyclables until full. Participants can then empty recyclables into a blue recycling container in centrally located areas. Custodial staff then empty these bins, which are taken to the recycling specialist for retrieval. UA Recycling asks that all recyclables remain separated by item type in the green bags.

Confidential Shredding

UA Recycling carries out the shredding of all confidential materials on campus and provides free wheeled and locked confidential bins for departmental use. Bins are available in 65g or 95g size. A confidential bin can be dropped off for a clean out and collected once full. Many departments maintain a permanent confidential bin that recycling automatically checks weekly. Once in the recycling warehouse, staff dump all confidential papers into an industrial shredder. Certificates of destruction can be provided upon request. The department also has a shredder capable of destroying non-paper records such as computer hard drives and credit card terminals.
