Tips for a Safe Start to a New Semester

The start of a new academic year is just days away, and you’re probably busy getting ready.

New clothes…✅

New books…✅

New classes…✅

But in all the hustle, there are a few things that you may have forgotten. Here are five tips that will help you have a safe start to the new semester.

1. Download the UA Safety app.

Your phone really needs this app. It has the weather forecast for Tuscaloosa, directions to all campus buildings, and any UA Alert that may be issued. Plus, if you ever need help, emergency services can be contacted by just pushing one button.

2. Think about where you will park.

Anyone who parks on campus will need a parking permit or will need to use one of the many visitor parking spaces.

When you receive a parking permit, you must park in lots that are designated for the zone of your permit. Parking in lots that are not designated for your permit could result in a $50 fine. Use the UA campus map to find the lots where you can park.

3. Use the Crimson Ride.

Where you park may not be close to your classes or the other buildings that you need to get to. Instead of walking across campus, grab a seat on the Crimson Ride. You can use the Passio Go! app or website to see the buses in real time so you’ll know when the bus is getting close to your bus stop.

4. Check out your buildings.

During the first few days of the new semester, take some time to familiarize yourself with the buildings where you have classes, your residence hall or other buildings that you frequent like the UA Student Center. If you’re an employee, take a walk around your office building, even if you’ve worked there for many years. Learn where the exits are in case of an evacuation, or the best available refuge area in the building in case you are told to shelter in place. Information can be found on the Building Emergency Plans in each building, which are posted near exits and elevators.

5. Find the nearest storm shelter

More than likely, campus will experience severe weather at some point during the semester. When the National Weather Service issues a tornado watch or warning, you should know where the storm shelters are located on campus so you can move to one quickly.
