Family Night at the Museum Travels Around the World

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Alabama Museum of Natural History and University of Alabama Graduate School are partnering to present Family Night at the Museum March 4 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This year’s theme is “Around the World!” Families will have the opportunity to learn sign language, read Arabic stories, learn Mandarin, study fossils and examine Alaskan wildlife.

Attendees will be given a passport to collect stamps by interacting with each of the graduate departments designated a specific country. Those who complete the passport and submit the door prize slip will be entered into drawings to win prizes. Drawings will be held at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

“Families attending the event will be able to learn more about the exciting research that our graduate students are participating in,” said Tierney Jenkins, director of programming with the UA Graduate School. “It’s a great opportunity to see that research can be fun and maybe inspire children’s future endeavors.”

Family Night at the Museum brings graduate departments together to showcase their content area through interactive activities. UA Graduate School organizations and departments involved include secondary math education, biological sciences, modern language, NERD lab and geological sciences.

“Family Night at the Museum is a chance for K-12 students to get a glimpse into the many career paths offered to them at The University of Alabama and the work that is being done by graduate students,” said Joyia Davis, education outreach coordinator with the Alabama Museum of Natural History. “The Alabama Museum of Natural History is happy to bring Family Night at the Museum back to share the museum’s resources and be a gathering place for UA graduate students, faculty and their families.”

The Alabama Museum of Natural History is located inside Smith Hall on the UA campus at 427 Sixth Avenue, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487.
