The women's wheelchair basketball team celebrates their victory on the court by raising the trophy

Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Wins 8th National Championship

The University of Alabama Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team has brought home another championship for the Capstone.

The team defeated Illinois 50-48 on a buzzer beater at the National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Championship tournament March 19. The victory marks the eighth overall and third consecutive national championship for the team.

“I am so proud of this team,” said Head Coach Ryan Hynes. “This group of young ladies has been so impressive from day one. For me, the best part of this journey was being able to see the growth and development of this team from our very first practice to raising the championship trophy.”

The team won its first championship in 2009, before going on to clinch titles in 2010, 2011, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2022.

As defending champions, the Crimson Tide entered the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed. Senior Lindsey Zurbrugg scored the winning point just after the buzzer sounded. Zurbrugg, who won a bronze medal in the 2020 Paralympic Games, led the Crimson Tide in overall points throughout the season. Sophomore Mary Silberman was named MVP of the tournament, scoring 24 points in the championship game.
