Faculty Technology Showcase Set for Feb. 28

2020 Faculty Technology Showcase Save the Date February 28The 2020 showcase will feature classroom collaboration, innovation network and generational research.

Faculty and staff from across campus will be exhibiting their teaching and research through the use of innovative technologies at this year’s UA Faculty Technology Showcase in Gordon Palmer Hall.

The Center for Instructional Technology, with the Teaching and Learning Committee, hosts this showcase as an opportunity to highlight the uses of technology by creative faculty, staff and graduate students.

“The Faculty Technology Showcase provides us the opportunity to show off what instructors are doing in the classroom with new and cool technologies,” said Dr. Rachel Thompson. “I think what brings people back to the showcase year after year is that the presenters offer their material in a comfortable and open environment.”

Attendees are encouraged to come and go at their convenience to see presentations and demonstrations, as well as network within the UA community. Presentations will be in the form of electronic poster sessions that will last approximately 50 minutes each.

Dr. Darryl Thornton, instructor in the College of Human Environmental Sciences’ department of clothing, textile and interior design, will be showcasing his use of Flipgrid social learning platform for online classes.

“Utilizing Flipgrid creates a sense of community in the classroom, and it creates an in-class experience for an online class,” Thornton said. “It’s really simple to use, but it engages and empowers students to have a voice in the classroom and recognize one another.”

Dr. Tracy Hinton and Stefanie Buckner, both instructors, will be presenting alongside instructional designer Robyn Hammontree from the College of Continuing Studies on their recent UA Early College course redesign to create engaging course content for Generation Z.

“We teach a course for the UA Early College program that focuses on sophomores, juniors and seniors. In our presentation we’re going to take a look at how we engage and empower Generation Z through different technologies,” said Buckner.

The showcase will be held in the second-floor annex of Gordon Palmer Hall from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28. Visit cit.ua.edu for a complete schedule and also details about each presentation.
