What a Year! A Look Back at 2019 December 20, 2019 Written by Cathy Butler-Burnette 1 min read XFacebookLinkedInEmail We started the year making a difference. The annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration expanded to become a day of service. February brought our fourth consecutive Tree Campus USA status. In March UA’s men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball teams won their third and sixth national championships, respectively. Civil rights trailblazer Autherine Lucy Foster received an honorary doctorate at May commencement. The University of Alabama Board of Trustees dedicated John H. England Jr. Residence Hall June 6. In August we welcomed the first cohort of UA’s CrossingPoints certificate in occupational studies program. Hundreds of first responders completed the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. In October RISE broke ground on an upcoming addition. And In November we broke a record in United Way giving — $483,807. We crowned the year with the gift of a Minerva statue to celebrate the city of Tuscaloosa’s bicentennial.
