Fashion for Life Celebrates 10th Anniversary

For the last decade, senior apparel design students at The University of Alabama have made the most of an opportunity to showcase their best work and make a difference to those in need.

Fashion for Life allows students to showcase their fashion design skills while helping a good cause.

Student fashion designs will hit the runway for the 10th annual Fashion for Life Nov. 24 at 5 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Ballroom. The show offers designers from the College of Human Environmental Sciences an opportunity to share their collections in front of friends, family and members of the community while raising money for Tuscaloosa DHR Children’s Christmas Gift Fund.

“Fashion for Life is the culminating experience for our senior students studying apparel design in the department of clothing, textiles and interior design,” said Brian Taylor, instructor of apparel design. “This year we have 16 designers showing, each with a unique sense of style and point of view. The collection development process and fashion show experiences mimic what students will encounter once entering the apparel industry.”

In this year’s show, designers have been inspired by their own personal experiences in life. Fashions will incorporate sustainability, size inclusiveness, cultural backgrounds and model diversity among other themes.

“I’m extremely proud of their hard work and excited to see their work displayed in an event that also gives back to the community,” said Taylor.

The designers are Marc Biancavilla, of Eastchester, New York; Jael Brooks, of Woodbridge, Virginia; Ian Burch, of Herndon, Virginia; Sydney Good, of Houston, Texas; Mara Baez-Velazquez, of Phenix City; Alexandra Gibson, of Tuscaloosa; Gizelle Macias, of Bradenton, Florida; Kaitlyn Sarao, of Coral Springs, Florida; Leah Sneddon, of Harvest; Millie Steed, of Huntsville; Mo Taylor, of Birmingham; Kailyn Thomas, of Tuscaloosa; Coleen Tolentino, of Huntsville; Pang Vang, of Spartanburg, South Carolina; Jannell Whitfield, of Atlanta, Georgia; and Kendall Worrell, of Boston, Massachusetts.

Fashion for Life tickets are $5 and may be purchased in advance from Donna McGee at 306 Doster Hall or at the event. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.
