TO HELP UTILITIES, RESEARCHERS SEEK ANCIENT FLOODS NEAR TENNESSEE RIVERWith funding from energy utilities, a team of researchers at UA is collaborating with peers across the Southeast to understand the frequency and possible size of floods along the Tennessee River that pre-date reliable weather and streamflow records. INCORPORATING MORE MATH INTO HIGH SCHOOL COMPUTER SCIENCE – UA will begin providing additional training opportunities for secondary math education majors for preparation to teach computer science. A $300,000 National Science Foundation grant will fund the creation of a course in the spring that will focus on computer science education topics, including equity in computer science education and the newly developed Alabama K-12 CS standards. The grant provides up to 30 $1,500 stipends over the next two years to students who take the new course. The idea is to strengthen the quality of computer science courses in Alabama high schools by incorporating more math principles into course design and instruction. JOB SKILLS, FINANCIAL TRAINING AVAILABLERegistration is open for the fall session of Culverhouse LIFT, or Learning Initiative and Financial Training. A service sponsored by UA’s Culverhouse College of Commerce, LIFT provides one-on-one job skills and financial literacy training for Tuscaloosa-area adults and teens at no cost. Program participants come from different backgrounds and include urban and rural residents, veterans and high school students. ALABAMA HERITAGE MAGAZINE — The Summer 2017 issue of Alabama Heritage magazine, co-published by UA, features expanded articles, a pullout map and a detailed foldout timeline that highlights Alabama becoming a territory. Feature stories outline how the Mississippi-Alabama border was well-debated and became “more or less arbitrary” and a look at Alabama’s first capital, located in St. Stephens. SUPREME COURT JUSTICE TO VISIT LAW SCHOOL – Sonia Sotomayor, associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, will participate in a conversation with Dr. Mark E. Brandon, dean of the UA School of Law, and Judge William Harold Albritton III for the Fall 2017 Albritton Lecture Sept. 12 at UA.
