UA’s Creative Campus Holds ‘Art in the Park’

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s Creative Campus presents Art in the Park, a day of free, hands-on arts workshops designed for children of all ages, Sunday, Oct. 11 from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. at the Magnolia shelter in Snow Hinton Park.

The park is located on McFarland Boulevard across from McFarland Mall.

Taught by UA students, Art in the Park is designed to inspire community children of all ages to engage in art-making activities. Students in the Honors Theatre Society Alpha Psi Omega, Rip Tide Dance, and the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra will lead workshops on theater and dance, and host a musical petting zoo.

Face painting of famous works of art and collaborative painting inspired by famous techniques will give participants a fun lesson in art history. Other activities will include found poetry, printmaking, storytelling, model clay work, and a photo booth for children to dress up and recreate famous paintings as the backdrop.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Tuscaloosa area children to engage with university students in making art,” said Dr. Rachel Raimist, co-director of Creative Campus.

“On the surface it looks fun with face painting, theater and music activities, but at Creative Campus we believe that art is a way to impact community,” Raimist said. This event will help children to build self-confidence and express themselves, while finding a passion for the arts.”

Located within UA’s Office of Academic Affairs, Creative Campus is a collaborative system connecting students, faculty and community to nurture innovative thinkers who turn ideas into action.

Creative Campus strives to collaborate and establish partnerships across campus and in the Tuscaloosa community; in doing so, the organization serves as a voice for the cultural arts. At the center of Creative Campus is the undergraduate intern program. For more information on Creative Campus visit: http://www.creativecampus.ua.edu
