Today, the average American wedding costs about $30,000 — even more in major cities. What’s a family to do if their budget isn’t anywhere near the average?
The good news is that brides can cut back in so many areas and still have the wedding of their dreams. The first step in not spending too much is creating a budget. Put the budget in writing, and keep to it with a good tracking system.
The University of Alabama’s Kimberly Boyle offers some tips on cutting costs on the big day.
- Cut back on the guest list with a fine-tooth comb.
- Select a scenic location to save on décor and the florist bill.
- Timing impacts what you serve for food and beverage. Select an earlier time in the day to save a bundle on catering.
- Sunday is the new Saturday. Selecting a different day of the week allows for cheaper costs and the availability of top vendors.
- Beer and wine vs. full bar is the way to trim the alcohol bill.
- Reuse as many flowers throughout the weekend as possible; bridesmaids’ bouquets make beautiful centerpieces.
- Select flowers that are in season.
- DJs and even iPods are a great way to save on music.
- Using ready to go sheet cake not only saves money but makes the guests happy to not wait for “Aunt Jenny” to cut the main cake.
- Print your own invitations.
- Pay with a credit card that offers cash rewards.
