UA’s Nursing College Honors Community Partners

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s Capstone College of Nursing will recognize and honor partners in the community for their commitment to nursing and to UA students during the College’s Honors Day program Friday.

The Outstanding Preceptor Undergraduate Award recognizes someone who has made significant contributions to the clinical education of CCN undergraduate students.

This year’s outstanding preceptor, chosen by both faculty and students, is Rachel Allen, who practices at Medical West, ICU in Bessemer. Allen has repeatedly been a preceptor to nursing students from various schools. She makes them feel comfortable while helping them develop their confidence.

“She is very generous and meticulous with the care she provides to her patients and families,” said Heather Reeves, an instructor in UA’s Capstone College of Nursing. “Her natural sense of caregiving exudes from her persona without any forced effort. Rachel Allen is definitely a role model to all nurses looking for guidance.”

The CCN Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes a CCN graduate who has demonstrated continuous and exemplary contributions to the profession of nursing or healthcare. This year, the college honors Philip Fikes.

Fikes is co-owner of a successful nurse anesthesia partnership and has a reputation of being an excellent clinician. Fikes has served as president of The University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing Alumni Association for more than 15 years.

During his term, Association membership and funds have increased tremendously, enabling the group to provide two endowed nursing scholarships and to develop the Alumni Garden for students, staff and faculty to have an inviting environment to think, study or relax.

He works tirelessly on the College’s events surrounding homecoming, and he has also provided guest lectures for some nursing courses.

The Janet S. Awtrey Distinguished Nursing Leader Award was established by Dr. Janet Awtrey, dean emeritus, to recognize leaders in clinical practice or education for contributions made specifically to the Capstone College of Nursing and to nursing as a profession.

This year’s recipient is Alicia Weatherby. She has served as the clinical affiliate coordinator for DCH Regional and Northport Medical Centers in Tuscaloosa and Northport.

“Alicia works tirelessly to provide excellent clinical experiences for over 800 nursing, EMT and paramedic students,” said Dr. Melondie Carter, assistant dean for undergraduate programs in the Capstone College of Nursing.

One of the primary educators for the monthly Patient Care Assistant orientation, Weatherby also plays a role in RN orientation. She displays a passion for contributing to nursing education from the clinical acute care setting, event organizers said.
