TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s Dr. Jason Black has been named the recipient of the 2015 Southern States Communication Association Gender Scholar of the Year Award.

Black is an associate professor of rhetoric and public discourse and an affiliate professor of gender and race studies. His research interests include LGBTQ topics, Native American issues and general masculinity topics.

“Interestingly, I’m the first man to win the award in its 28-year history,” Black said. “I think this historical note is a testament to the power of intersectionality and scholarly pluralism in contemporary gender studies. I’m excited and honored to win the award.”

Black has published a number of gender- and diversity-related articles, as well as the books “An Archive of Hope: Harvey Milk’s Speeches and Writings” and the recently released “American Indians and the Rhetoric of Removal and Allotment.”
