UA’s Moundville Park Trains New Volunteers for Multiple Opportunities

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s Moundville Archaeological Park is hosting a volunteer training session from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21.

This opportunity offers people interested in history, archaeology, Native American folklore and more a chance to advance their educational interests in a museum atmosphere, while enhancing the Moundville site experience for visitors.

In addition to learning the principles of archaeology, trainees will get an overview of the prehistory of Alabama and the Moundville site. Volunteers will also learn different ways to interpret the information they’ve learned to give visitors to the park the best experience possible.

Volunteers are essential to the park’s success. The Moundville Native American Festival boasted more than 1,050 volunteer hours in 2014, but various units within the park need help year round. Jobs available include tour guides, garden and park caregivers, program specialists, museum docents, collection assistants and web specialist.

As part of UA, Moundville Archaeological Park is an equal opportunity entity. Every effort is made to place volunteers according to their abilities and inclinations.

As part of this training, potential volunteers are interviewed about their specific job interests. A minimum of 16 hours per month of donated time is requested of all park volunteers.

The training is free of charge and will be held at the Nelson B. Jones Conference Center at Moundville Archaeological Park. Refreshments and lunch will be served.

Moundville is located 13 miles south of I-20/59 in Tuscaloosa.
